Ideas worth implementing – 1

While writing on the topic of Advertisements in my previous post, I thought about a couple of ideas that are worth implementing but probably haven’t been implemented yet. Let’s discuss those.

1. Automatic lowering of volume (or muting) when the Ads starts playing on TV.

I have personally noticed that the volume actually goes a little bit up when the Ads play, or maybe the Ads are simply recorded and played at 110-120% of the volume. What if those are played at 10-20% of the volume instead, or maybe simply muted? When you watch the Ads without the sound they will not have the same effect on you. Marketers and companies will hate this obviously (and maybe that’s why this hasn’t been done), but it will be an effective way to not get persuaded with a bombardment of offers and suggestions about products and services to buy.

2. Providing an indication that a long Ad break is about to be over.

Say, you are watching a movie or some popular live program, and they play Ads which run for up to 3-4 minutes or even more sometimes. It will be great to let the Ads play while you go and do something else (some chores or maybe a quick phone call). It will be great if you get reminded just around 10-20 seconds before the Ad break is over so you can make your way back in front of the TV. Same problem, Marketers won’t like it 🙂

Better yet, both these ideas can be combined in to one. So as soon as the Ads break starts, your TV gets muted and then it gets un-muted around 10-20 seconds before the Ads break ends (All this needs to be configurable and override-able in some settings obviously).

If you think about it, this can only be implemented by the channels, and they will not do it because it does not make sense for them. But how about we develop a machine learning model to train on the channel programming based on content, time, Ads patterns, and a bunch of other variables. And then that model can predict the Ads start and end time. Using this model and a device like Alexa or a programmable remote or so, we can then mute/unmute the TV just when we need. Looks very feasible to me. WDYT?
